Hamilton Flight Timer

Hamilton Flight Timer

The Hamilton Watch Company has made watches since 1892 and has a long history in aviator watches. Hamilton and the Swiss helicopter rescue team, Air Zarmatt conglomerated to make the Hamilton Khaki Flight Timer .

Aviation WatchThis multi functional aviator watch combines an analogue and digital watch to bring a host of function that will appeal to pilots and non-pilots alike.
The watch is powered by ETA’s E20.373 movement, which is a part of ETA’s super-precision Thermoline family of thermocompensated quartz movements. A big mouth full, but only means a highly accurate watch.

The Hamilton Khaki Flight Timer comes in a couple of different colour option, with a choice of stainless, leather or resin (my favourite) bracelet. The casing is made of stainless steel and has a diameter of 40 millimetres and the glass is Sapphire crystal a hard, scratch resistant material.
The glass is covered in an anti-reflective coating and for night-time, the hands have the standard luminance coating and the digital side a backlight.
The crown and 3 additional buttons on the 2,4 and 10 o’clock positions operate all the functions of the watch.

Analogue Functions:Aviator Watch

The analogue side of the watch has big skeleton hands to enable a clear view of the digital face behind it. When you press one of the multi-function buttons the hands can also be moved out of the way for a better view.

A standard chronograph is part of the analogue functions and is operated by a dedicated buttons, which is a convenient feature.
The bezel is a bit unusual due to the fact that it counts down with the minute hand and not up like a dive watch.

Digital Functions:

It is the digital side of the watch that makes it a true aviator watch. The Hamilton Khaki Flight Timer is also a personalised logbook. It will record 20 flights and up to 99 landings for each flight (poor pilot who has to do that).

Other functions include:
• Current Time
• GMT
• Extra Time Zone
• Perpetual Calender
• Alarm
• ISA temperatures
All the functions can be quite complicated and a good read of the manual is necessary to make full use of all the functions.

Below is a video that explains the functions a bit better:

Hamilton Flight Timer Review:

The Hamilton Khaki Flight Timer is aimed at the mid-level market and is an affordable highly functional aviation watch. The host of functions are dedicated to pilots are practical and functional.

The analogue/digital combination might not be for everybody, but will certainly turn some heads.

Suunto Core

Suunto Core
Suunto has been making sport watches, dive computers, compasses and other sports instruments since 1936.

The Suunto Core falls under the popular ABC (altimeter, barometer, compass) outdoor watches and because of these features it makes a great aviator watch.

The Suunto Core comes in a host of different stylish options, from brushed steel, resin, all black and a host of different funky colors. Regardless of the style, all the watches share the same great functionality and robustness.

The diameter is 49mm, which makes it really easy to read and for night flying the backlight is perfect. Some people claim it’s not bright enough, but having a lighthouse on your wrist is terrible for night vision.

The watch is 30m waterproof so its not a dive watch but will not be damaged when you go snorkeling or swimming.

The functions of the watch are numerous and too much to go into detail here. For pilots the duel time (UTC), the chronograph, and first/last light functions are very useful. The “weather forecast “can be useful, but because of the nature of flying it will get a bit confused.

More Suunto Core Functions are:aviator watch image

  • Altimeter
  • Barometer
  • Compass
  • Temperature
  • Storm alarm
  • Sunrise / sunset
  • Depth meter for snorkeling
  • Multiple watch, date and time functions
  • User-replaceable battery

Here is a good video that explains some of the functions in more detail:

I am really fond of this watch and so are other pilots, because I see it more and more in the cockpits of planes.

The simple, and easy readable dial with dual time makes it great for time keeping and the stopwatch with the seconds creeping around the face makes it easy to time approaches.

Suunto has made a great aviation watch but have a look here to see how it compares to other watches.

Casio G-Shock Aviator

Casio G-Shock AviatorThe iconic Casio G-Shock Aviator  is one of the best pilot watches around. Build on the concept of being tough, the G-shock has been around now for a couple of decades.

The Aviation series come in different formats, some with a compass, some with analog and digital combined and then some more.

They are solar-powered and make use of atomic timekeeping and have a UTC function, which make them perfect for pilots.

The Casio G-Shock Aviator  might not be the style that everybody likes, but no doubt Casio almost perfected the aviator watch.

Laco 1925

Laco pilot watchLaco crafted watches for Luftwaffe pilots during WWII and have kept on making watches that are great for pilots. Their focus was on ease of readability when the pilots were flying in adverse condition and that’s the reason why they have big watch faces, black hands on white faces and bright luminance for night flying.

The pilot watches come in Type A and Type B format, with the B having the inner circle hour dial. Laco also offer their range from more modest pricing to high-end.
